the book

Published in March 2008 by HarperCollins Canada, With or Without God: Why the Way We Live Is More Important than What We Believe grabbed media attention. Headlines such as "Taking Christ out of Christianity" and "The Jesus Problem", provocative introductions for a book born to be exactly that, appeared in national publications on the eve of Easter. It was a good start. Six months later and over 7,000 books sold, the conversation remains heated.

Not for the faint of heart, With or Without God seeks to challenge the mainline liberal church to shift the worship and practice of Canadian mainline Christianity from its primary focus on traditional Christian doctrine and story to one that celebrates the non-exclusive principles of compassionate living and right relationship with self, others, and the planet. In the course of the change such a challenge will provoke, whether or not one believes in a theistic, divine, supernatural being will become irrelevant. Rather, the focus will be on creating non-exclusive communities that will help people figure out how their faith calls them to live, the guiding principles of which will be the life-enhancing values that have long been the unheralded foundation of the mainline Christian Church.

With or Without God has been studied on the website of the Canadian Centre for Progressive Christianity and The United Church of Canada's Wondercafe (at least twice), blogged about in Canada, the UK, and the United States, engaged by congregations eager to find ways to apply its concepts and preached on both by those who have waited long such a book and those who believe the book's author, Gretta Vosper, to be leading the "people down the path of destruction". It's supporters are often still closeted due to the challenge and power of those who prefer their Christianity traditional and their change tempered.
